problems with SE:IV v.1.49
i have SE:IV Version 1.49 (yeah, i'm a bit behind the times, but i'm poor, so what are ya gonna do? ) , the only thing i've added is the 'ultimate' mod...i played the game regularly with no problems for months, but i recently upgraded to windows 98 (told you i was behind the times), and since i installed the game after the OS change, i've been having this problem...when i end my first turn, an error message comes up and says "file access denied"...from that point i can go no further in the game and have to exit the program...i have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times...and i haven't done any personal modding within the files or anything, so i don't think i messed it up...
also, i seem to be able to carry on a multiplayer game with someone on another machine with no problems...
has anyone come across this problem before? any suggestions?
i appologize if this has already been asked at some point...
thanks in advance for any help.

Well, could be several issues:
Your savegames could be write protected. Check their properties. (I doubt this, but it can cause errors)
Upgrading the OS can sometimes fubar your system. Id have to tinker before I could find the problems.
Make sure you have enough disk space (I bet you do, but check it anyhow)
If you can, do a completely clean install of Win98. If you only have the Win95 disk and the Win98 upgrade disk, and if you have 2 cd drives, you can fool the Win98 upgrade disk by pointing the existing installation to the CD drive with Win95, and continuing installing on C:

Re: problems with SE:IV v.1.49
ok, i guess i should clarify about the 'upgrade' to win98...in actuality, i had win 95 and had the game installed on that OS and was able to play with no problems...i then had to change out my hard drive because it had a problem, at which time i installed win98 onto this new hard drive...now the game is installed on my 2nd hard drive, which is slaved to my main drive...really the only thing on the main drive is win98...this new hard drive and the new OS have caused me no other problems, which makes this problem even more curious...
also, reinstalling 98 or 95 isn't do-able...
again, many thanks for any help anyone can give me...

AFAIK, you don't even need two CD drives. When it said it couldn't find my old Windows installation (on my blank system), I took out the Win98 CD, put in the Win 3.11 CD, browsed to the Setup.exe file, and it worked fine. Of course, it wanted me to switch back to the Win98 CD.

That is how the windows upgrade disks are set up. You don't have to have the old OS installed, you can just have the CD for it. There is really now fooling involved.
