Newbie: Alliegance subverter and shields?

AFAIK, damage types other than "Normal" don't work on units. In fact, "Crew ConVersion" might work as regular damage.

What if fighters had an allegiance subverter that only worked on units?

Do Alliegance subverters work on troops and population on a planet?

I have been desparately trying to test this but the computer opponent is just blowing my fleets out of the air, I can't get any ships to survive long enough to test it out.

Darnit, I can't even get past his satellites and weapon platforms, asaulting planets is darn near impossible!

I know troops with Allegiance Subverters (modded) don't do anything to enemy troops or pop. Ships with AS don't convert anything except bases or ships.
