Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
Ok, I was messing around and created a ship with 10 M ton capability (I now realize that I need one with 33 M ton capability and to limit it to 1 emgine {so it cannot be used in battle} in order to allow me to create a ringworld with only one ship....) Anyways, I had to create 9 more of these monster ships for the storage capability to create the sphereworld, and went to the center of my homesystem to create the sphereworld. I went into Stellar Manipulation and went to Construct and then selected Sphereworld and....Presto!!! a sphereworld was created, and all my ships were lost. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! Is the game designed to do this, and if so, how on Earth are you going to create a Sphereworld (20 K tons of this, 20 K tons of that and the generators, plus associated engines, master comps, etc's, etc's) Can you create the sphereworld without losing that huge investment in ships? Thanks for any assistance. Charlie.

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
nope, you loose it all. the way you are supposed to do it is with construction ships that build starbases at the site. you dont loose the construction ships, but you loose the starbases.

Okay, (this will show my "newbie" status at SE IV but I will do it anyways. How do you build a construction ship for deep space? And how do you get the needed supplies to where you are building the Starbase, Ringworld, Sphereworld, etc.?

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
there is a component called a spaceyard, and you can add it to a ship or base. this will let you construct things with that ship. then move the ship to where the star is, and have it start building starbases with the sphereworld components on the bases. send 11 construction ships and you can build all the starbases you will need for a ringworld at the same time.

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
Ok, thanks for the help. I see the math here, I need to build 21 total (1 with generator, 10 with cable, 10 with plating) to build the Sphereworld. I have to say, it is a huge investment in resources, but to get 240 facilities to start, and to have the massive population capabilities, WOW!.
Thanks for all of the help. (now to spend the next few months on a real game to try this out...)

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
However, unless you have 11 construction ships, you need to mothball the starbases untill you're ready to build to avoid the unaffordable maintenance. However to unmothball costs heaps in itself.
I think I'm gonna mod some -100% maintenance in HDCs and the plating and make them halfcost to make them worth it remotely.
Anyway is there a way to get the AI to make sphere and ringworlds given they have enough resources?

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
At the moment I see no possibility to make the AI build ring- or sphereworlds.
One small tip: use only one space yard ship to build a space yard base on a space station in the sector with the star. If that's done use them to build more space yard bases until you have 11 ( for ringworld) or 21 (for sphereworlds). Then start constructing the components.
Bases cost less maintenance than ship.
Because the ring- and sphereworld placement component takes longer to construct than the rest of the components I use one the first available base space yard to start this construction earlier than the rest. If some components would be completed before all other components are ready put their space yard on hold until the rest of the constructions catch up.

Ok, once again, I am confused, I built my space yards with one of the required components, (used the cheat for quick build) and then built the sphereworld. What are you talking about where you build the spaceyards and then build the components?...I thought you had to have the components built when you built the space base....how do you build the components afterwords? Thanks.
Charlie.

spaceyards are what you use to build the starbases with the components on them. he is saying that since BASES cost half the maintanance that SHIPS cost, that instead of building 11 or 21 construction ships, you could build one construction ship and have it in turn build 11 or 21 construction BASES, which would then build the starbases with the components on them.
personally, i think thats nitpicking and is a silly idea since construction cruisers dont cost that much anyway, and the time you would spend building the bases would make it a moot point anyway. However, the thing about putting your construction queues on hold so all of the starbases with components on them get finished at the same time, is a good idea. that will save you from paying the maintnance on all those expensive components, and you wont have to lower their cost to make them buildable.
of course, RWs and SWs are sort of trophy items anyway, and i have only heard one or two stories from games where they had any benefit.

Re: Ringworld and Sphereworld Construction Questions
I just put all the queues on hold at the 1 turn left marker and complete them all, but if you have a minimal amount of resources storage (how you would have htat at this point in the game is beyond me) then you would have problems constructing them, but that is a different story.
Building bases is a waste of time. Now you have a ring/sphere with 21 construction yards, 21 immobile construction yards at that. No planet needs that much.
I could see 5 or maybe 10 but that is pushing it. With the mobile Version (that doesn't cost much more) you get flexibilty, the key to any military stradegy.
For all the hype, (alwyas questions on the Boards) that sphere and rings get they really arn't htat usefull. If you can build one the game has either gone on for (a) 300+ turns and no one has won and this is very elaborate, (b)or you have won the game already
