range check error in simulation
I am getting swamped with RCE's almost every time I try to do a simulation: using 1.41 with TDM mod 1.80 on W2000, simultaneous moves. No RCE's elsewhere. Any ideas on a workaround? Could this have anything to do with the number of units allowed? Or number of designs? Help would be appreciated.

Re: range check error in simulation
When I had this kind of problems, reinstalling SE IV and then rebooting the computer solved them all. Apparently SE keeps some stuff in temp directories and/or registry, and from time to time this "stuff" may go out of whack and cause problems.
I have similar circumstances, Win 2K + sim. turns.

Re: range check error in simulation
i get an RCE everytime i run a simulation against a fully loaded sphereworld, or more than 1000 fighters. it does seem to have to do with the number of units, or the total of the shield regen / armor regen components across all units.
i can avoid the errors by reducing the number of units.

Re: range check error in simulation
I deleted all my temp files, reinstalled and rebooted, but to no effect. Yes, one effect. Now every time I resume the game I have a different ship set and flag! Any more suggestions? This RCE thing is a shame because the simulations are, in my opinion, one of the best aspects to this game.

No ideas about the RCEs, but the random shipset thing happens when the game can't find the shipset folder that the .emp file says that the race is using. It happens a lot on PBW when people don't have a custom shipset installed, which one of their opponents is using. Make sure your shipset is in the right folder, with the filenames matching, and the random shipsets should stop.

Re: range check error in simulation
Then this must be a common occurrence, namely anytime a random AI happens to have the same ship set as chosen by the player. Seems like a bug, then. Is there no way to avoid this other than choosing a custom ship set from the start (not a very user-friendly solution)?

No, I think you've misunderstood what I said. The game is perfectly happy with multiple players having the same shipset.
Here's an example. Player A joins a PBW game and uploads an .emp with his race using the SW-Emp1 custom shipshet. Player B in the same game, who has never installed SW-Emp1, will see a different random shipset for Player A every turn, until he downloads and installs SW-Emp1 himself. The shipset Player B sees may or may not be being used by another player in the game.
What appears to have happened to you is that the shipset you used to create the .emp file for the game isn't installed properly; it's either not there at all, in the wrong folder, or the filenames for the individual .bmp files don't match the folder name.

Re: range check error in simulation
Capnq, it is my OWN ship set and flag that changes , not one of the AI's. I happened to choose the Earth Alliance set for a custom Empire of my own definition, and with TDM mod. All went well until I reinstalled the game (trying without success to eliminate the RCEs. Now my flag changes every turn,

Re: range check error in simulation
This might help:
(1) Copy the "ModPack Patch.txt" from the TDM-ModPack folder to your Space Empires IV folder.
(2) Delete the "Path.txt" in your Space Empire IV folder.
(3) Rename the "ModPack Path.txt" now located in the Space Empire IV folder to "Path.txt" .

Re: range check error in simulation
Earth Alliance is one of the TDM-Modpack races. Is the Earth Alliance folder in Pictures/Races, and does the folder name match the individual ship names? If they are, the next best bet is a path problem, as Mephisto suggests.
