Default Elemental Damage Spells

How does one know exactly which spells cause what damage? I mean, it is kind of obvious that fireball does fire damage, and lightning bolt shock, etc. But how about other stuff?

I was choosing battle spells for my Machaka mages to be used against fire immune enemies. I was about to select magma bolts, but began wondering whether fire immunity blocks them? Then I started cheking and found a lot of stuff that I'm not so sure about. For example Geyser, the Acid type spells, Astral Fires and a couple of others.

So, how do I know what spell does what kind of damage? Do I need to test them individually?

Ya it's hard to tell. You'd think that Phoenix Pyre would be fire damage since it takes Fire magic to cast and makes flames when when it goes off, but fire immune units still die to it. Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it, so I can't really help you. Would seem logical that it would be based on what paths are necessary to cast, but then you have some spells that take 2 paths, like Acid spells so there don't seem to be any set rules.

That would make for a good FAQ.

Well, the logical explanation is that the explosion is actually a concussion effect, just like real explosions: Any flash damage is entirely secondary to the damage done by the bLast shockwave, which is concussive in nature.

Of course, Illwinter was reportedly claimed that this is actually a bug, and it will be changed to inflict fire damage again in some future patch.

A pyre is a funereal fire, though, so my bet would be it will do fire damage in a future patch.

Another question is:
How much damage do breath of winter and soul vortex do, and are they armor piercing or negating?

That is a VERY good question... I was just noting today that the inherent Chill effect of some units seems vastly inferior to Breath of Winter... but there are no numbers associated with either, so it's hard to know what the difference is. Does Chill and Breath of Winter stack, or does the superior one win out? I have no idea... though I should probably test...
