Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
I just ran a small test to see what happens, if a race that lives in no athmosphere uses an athmospheric modification plant on a Gas Giant:
Nothing happens at all! The athmosphere will simply not be changed.
Of course a Gas Giant with no athmosphere would be a little bit strange, but I think this is quite a severe handicap for a player who choses no athmosphere on the home planet. Especially for the AI who does not use foreign races to colonize non breathebel planets in contrast to the human players.

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
Since none of the default AI races has 'none' for an atmosphere, I don't see why this is a big deal.
As far as players are concerned, if you choose a race that lives in no atmosphere, and you use other races for other planets, you can dispense with atmosphere converters entirely... I still wouldn't pick that, but it's a viable option.

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
The only reason atmosphere converters won't work in this case is that there are no gas giant none pictures or planets set up so since there is nothing to change to the game can't do it.

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
I don't even see a need for the no atomsphere option. I can't figure it. Why would any one choose this option? Well, because there are large planets, and lots of em, that have no atomsphere. I played a game on this setting, and discovered it to be quite challenging. Thats why it is in the game.

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
I play Ice world no atmosphere quite a bit. It eliminates the need for atmosphere converters as noted below and is quite a different game than playing a gas giant start up. You don't start out in first place very often if you pick this option.

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
On a tangent topic dealing w/Atmo Conve'trs, I have run across an anoying problem - not sure if it's a bug or programming.
After I use an Atmos Convert'r I to change a GG to a breathable atmosphere, I destroyed the AC I and turned the AI minister for the planet to active and went off to play w/the rest of my empire. Here is where the problem came in - my building minister keeps trying and if I don't pay attention, will successfully build Atmo Conv plants on all the Gas Giant worlds that have already been converted. They seem to wait till the Last couple of slots are left b/f they try to build em. I'm assuming the AI is looking at the original atmoshere of the planet instead of the converted one and as a result is trying to convert the atmos even though it is already converted. Verry annoying.
Anyone else ever run across this problem?

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
I like the no atmoshere for mechanoid races and the Borg e.g. have this.
If you play with Mod Pack 1.01 the AI will build atmosphere converters, but it cannot differentiate between planets that have already a breathable atmosphere and the planets that actually need this facility. According to Mephisto this cannot be improved at the moment by us. Only MM could do this (see topic about Mod Pack on this forum way below).

Re: Athmospheric modification/Gas Giant/No athmosphere
You can't change the atmosphere of a gas giant to "none" via an atmosphere converter because there are no planets of that type in SectType.txt, and you can't add any like that via editing the file, either. The program is program is apparently hard-coded not to accept a planet type like that. Here is a quote from the notes in SectType.txt:
"NOTE: The following combinations of plant physical type and atmosphere are not allowed: Gas Giant x None."
The typo of "plant" instead of "planet" is in the file, too
