Default Down side to ship computers

Is there a down side to having a ship controled by computers. You can get away with spending only 20k in mass when even the smallest crewed ship requires 30k.

Initial cost & maintenance on the master computer is higher for smaller ships, less so on larger ones requiring multiple crew, etc.

that and I have noticed (in the demo anyway.. full Version should be here tomorrow) that while higher tech computers are smaller, they also have less damage resistance. crewed ships should be far more durable with backup systems etc., than any computer controlled ship.

unless you use multiple computers or something, i have not tried that.

Computer viruses will destroy the computers easily, and cause your ship to be dead in the water.

On the other hand...
having crew quarters (and the rest) allows for your ship to be converted la Psychic Weapons

The two will hover, spinning inches above the ground. With a giant buttered cat array, a high-speed monorail could easily link New York with Chicago.

So what if you use both crew and computer.
Will you be safe from psychic and virus?
After all, the crew can control the ship if the virus takes out the computer and the computer can control of the ship if the psychic race takes out the crew.
Anyone try this combo?

That does work.
The Psychic converter does nothing and the computer virus destroys the Computer...
So you could in effect destroy the computer first and then use the psychic converter...

It does seem to be a very expensive way of doing things though.

How 'bout a mod that includes an enhancement to computers - virus detection and eradication or something like that. It could be built with levels of virus similar to levels of plague.

Is that do-able???

It's not currently possible as you would need MM to code that ability before items could include it... I have thought about what that would take, because I wanted to add special computers to my mod...
