Strange. For me it worked 100% of the time.

I suppose you made your tests with Nagot the Shadow, aka the Prince of Death of Pythium

Nope, I tested with NGF the whatever, the PoD of C'tis. I didn't play anything but C'tis/Miasma in the Last 2 weeks. These berserker falchioners are just devastating.

if the LI have a missile weapons (javelin) then target archers should work. Otherwise, it will be the AI to decide if yes or no it is better to target them.

I mean, there is no "fire at second line" order. You can order to fire at archers, but what if the units you want to target are NOT archers?
|
you cant. Archers didnt fire on second line historically. This is why a screen of skirmisher was a very good protection. in dom2, you will perhaps fire on the second line, if the AI consider this is a better choice.

(One other thing that puzzles me in the orders system is, there is apparently no way to order a set of squads to "keep formation" - sometimes I'd like a group of Hoplites to just move forward as much as the crossbowmen behind them need to get in range, but I can't find a way to do this - so in the end the Hoplites charge forward, get tired, and start getting friendly fire from the crossbowmen... )

the best thing to do is to put the melee group on hold and attack, to wait for the enemy, and put the missile group in the far back, so that when the melee units move, they are still a bit behind them. You dont have too much precise options in fact. If you want to get too much of your army, and put the missile units too close, they will move past your front line and get squashed.
