I still miss the old forums, very much. "Thank Gandalf Parker for this useful post." - That about sums up what I like about the new forum, and I'll never agree that it was worth what we gave up.

I have to say that, besides the color scheme, I don't remember anything that I liked more in the old forum. Even changes to editing posts don't really matter. The new search works much better, too.

The new search is better in most cases but fails miserably when you are searching for a phrase instead of a word, or if the word you are looking for is not indexed for some reason. For example:
Quote:
The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : wish

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
Personally I think the changes to editing posts were huge. 8 \ Equally huge, the changes to attachments, causing many people to have to use MediaFire and such for maps. Also, I will always feel the PM limit to have been completely unnecessary (the few people who "abused" it were not even a problem until all the data was converted to test the new forums, we could be forced to slash them again next time, in 2-3 years or whatever).
But it's hard to forgive Shrapnel for making us LOOK at this forum constantly, that's for sure. They seem so nice, why would they do this to us?
Other than the Search function (which is better and worse, apparently), you don't seem to have a strong opinion on what you like better, it just sounds as if you are apathetic towards the change. It's not that I don't like the new "features", but I'd give them up in a heartbeat to have the old forum back, or to have this one behave as the old one did (best of both worlds, server side functionality, and client side performance!).

To drag this back on topic for a moment, outstanding work on this art, Vladikus!

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
I did see the banner that you had in your sig, vladikus, but I think that the graphic was too big for a sig, too. Even Thilock_Dominus' sig graphics are borderline for me. They're about the maximum size that sig graphics should be.

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
For what it is worth, when I registered (a recent event) I noted that the forum rules said:
Quote:
GRAPHICS IN SIGNATURE GUIDELINES
1. No copyrighted material- No copyrighted photos or logos from other sites without the owners permission.
2. No hotlinking- Either host the image on your own website or on a free service, dont steal someone elses bandwidth.
3. File size limits: Combined size limit for all signature graphics can be no more than 35k
4. Dimension limits:
a. Combined maximum width of all graphics in signature is to be no more than 600pixels
b. Combined maximum height of all graphics in signature is to be no more than 125 pixels
If you are unsure if your signature graphics comply with the above guidelines, right click on the graphics in your signature and add together the dimensions and file sizes to get the total. If they are over the maximum width, height or file size then you need to remove or change your signature graphics until you comply with the above guidelines.
You will be asked to change your signature graphics if they do not comply with the above guidelines. If they are not changed, the graphics will be completely removed from your signature.
|
The banner Vladikus currently has in his sig certainly follows these rules, though Thilock's are about 30kB large. (if 35k is meant to be read as 35kB )

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
Well, while keeping within forum guidelines, what do people feel is a good size for signatures (so they are not too big, annoying, or distracting)? I know we aren't going to agree on this, but I would be interested to get opinions.

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
Just my personal opinion.....
The give and take in deciding sizes for sigs was to allow room for a decent amount of information. Taking up the entire allowed space for a not very informative picture was just something I wouldnt want to do. If too much of it went on then Im afraid more people would end up turning off the display of sigs in their view.
IMHO
But you do excellent work Vladikus

Re: Dominions User-Made Banners and Desktops and Cursors
Well, in a way the smaller the actual pixel size the higher the resolution, which sounds like a good trade off. So I'll just judge it for myself and let you all know when I have them resized.
