Re: 2018 SPMBT Upgrade Patch
Regarding air probably has to be a large force size also. AI definetly does use paras I wrote about it river crossing and virtualy every unit turned up riding a plane or chopper, nasty surprise that.
Makes sense really how often are airbourne troops used, would rather slightly less rather than more than reality.

Re: 2018 SPMBT Upgrade Patch
I had AI turning up with around 8 transport helicopters in an advance USSR-UK (the AI was UK). And it also pops up attack helicopters every now or then, but I think it doesn't buy them often because they are quite expensive. You might see the odd Gazelle with ATGMs, though.

Campaigns ignore your air settings, those only apply to single battles. Air strikes are determined by the campaign code itself, or in the case of user campaigns, what the designer put in for a scenario.

The AI has a preference for heliborne assault in river crossings, since it makes sense there.
Heliborne assault needs a lot of points, and is more likely to occur with armies that have lots of choppers - like Russians, USA but not so much say iraquis.
AI does sometimes buy helicopter transport in meeting engagements, and will tend to bring them in as late reinforcements to try to snatch an objective cluster.
Its easy to figure out how often and at what sort of points these things occur by making AI purchases in the battle generator.
Set the points and battle type and opponents
select auto purchase for both sides
select human deply for both sides
generate the battle
examine each sides purchases in deployment
exit the test game
repeat a sufficient time so that you are familiar with what it does at that points level. then try say doubling points and trying another 20-30 test buys.

Re: 2018 SPMBT Upgrade Patch
It's not just the big guys that buy helicopters. A few years ago, during a US Marines vs North Korea campaign, late in the game got hit with an NK Air Assault company in helicopters descending on the one bridge in the game...after almost all of my troops had crossed it and were chasing the remnants of the NK forces. The air assault landed on my support units, including my A0 unit, which were in the process of crossing the bridge. When the dust settled, lost all my artillery, ammo resupply trucks, air defense vehicles (not that they hit anything ;^), and my A0 unit. When I got done laughing (and cursing Andy and Don ;^), I restarted the game from an earlier round and got to try again. Still the best surprise I've ever had in a computer game. I would say don't change a thing, because AI helicopters do make for a more interesting game.

Re: 2018 SPMBT Upgrade Patch
The A0 unit had died, so the campaign would have been over. I didn't want the campaign to end, as I was only a few battles into it, so I reloaded the game so I wouldn't have to restart the campaign. If it had been a scenario, I would have played it to the end, as I'm curious how the game would play with the A0 unit dead, this was the only time I ever lost one (I usually do a good job of keeping them hidden and out of the way ;^).
