Emotion is only a part of what makes music good. You can not have good music just because it is emotional. The music itself still has to be good. Few of those bands ever seem to have much emotion in their singing or playing anyways.

emotional? George Jones' 'he stopped loving her today'. number one most emotional song i've ever heard, even if it makes strong men loudly claim they've never cried in their life.

It's still around, you just have to find it. As a plus, many of the hippies now bathe regularly.

I think the most emotional piece of 'modern' music I've ever heard is 'Fade to Black' played by four Finns on cellos, who call themselves Apocalyptica. Very good stuff.

But if you want music that expresses emotion best, you should look into opera or at least showtunes.

Must be looking at the wrong places, because most of the girls I see on the streets want at least $20 . (Not that I know from personal experience, but I do work in a probation office so I know about what's going on).

As far as showtunes, I got hooked when I first heard the main title to Star Wars on the radio. Some dj played it (I'm talking about the original combined Version with the main title and the ending credits), and I've been hooked on John Williams ever since. There are other good composers, namely Jerry Goldsmith and every once in awhile James Horner, but I've managed to collect almost everything Williams has done on CD. Not too crazy about his 60's and early 70's stuff, which has a lot of jazzy stuff going on. I can't wait to hear what he's going to do for Star Wars 3, and maybe Indiana Jones 4 (if they ever get around to doing it).

In my case, it's Lilo & Stitch and the Wiggles.
The best two kids cds I get to listen to are:
Laurie Beckman: Buzz Buzz
They Might Be Giants: No
I find myself listening to them in the car even when the Girl isn't there. Which I'm sure is a sign of mental decline. Anyway, if you have kids, I recommend you pick those up!

If you don't have kids, you sissies should be listening to Ween

My wife has been buying some gospel tapes for him to listen in the car. It does calm him down. Hey, if that's the music to calm the savage beast, what can I say?

For me it depends on the mood and occassion
1. Workout music - rock or rap
2. reading or writing - Jazz or classical music
3. cruising in my car - hip/hop mostly
4. playing war games at home (tabletop either miniatures or avalon hill type ) - Movie sound tracks ie : Braveheart, Glory, Excalibur and Conan the Barbarian just to name a few
as you can see a wide variety

Ween, it seems to me, is intentionally pissing me off. For some reason it feels very personal... so I don't care for that.

But some good, four-part harmony a capella gospel is, in fact, soothing music. It's a real shame that the only place a cappella seems to have in secular music is R&B. There's so much you can do with it that R&B never does.

[edit: Looks like I was wrong. It's R&B and collegic. Check these tunes.]

I agree with you. Emotion is not the only component of good music. However, music without emotion is not music at all. Anyways, what sort of music do YOU like? Do you even like anything at all? Or do you simply enjoy belittleing the opinions of others, while keeping your preferences secret to aviod other people criticizing your choice of music?
