Better than "Accept" without a firewall.

But some of us can be lazy creatures. The potential is there to just automatically accept the cookie whenever we see the prompt.

My feeling is if "prompt" is used, the user should have a clear modus operandi which is followed religiously.

Here is a possible one.

1) If the site is likely to be a responsible one such as Microsoft, allowing the cookie should be no problem as these companies do not "need" money and generally want to avoid the embarrassement of being accused of behaving unethically.
2) If the site is over the borderline of "safe", try rejecting the cookie.
3) If the site requires you take a cookie, you have a decision to make whether to accept it or not and the attendant risks associated with such acceptance.

I remember being able to prompt for cookies way back in the IE3 days, and I believe the distinction between first party and third party was made with IE5.
But, my personal method adds something more... I forget what exactly is the name of the dialogue, but the Last tab is entitled "Paranoia"... with subsections named something like "Things That Happen Behind Your Back". Quite useful

Maybe, I should have mentioned this earlier.

The automatic screening of cookies by IE6 and some firewalls is dependant upon P3P (Platform for Privacy Preferences).

Typically, a web site fills out a multiple-choice form about the information the web site collects. Then it is is coded into their web page. The privacy level selected in IE and/or firewall is then compared to the coded tag on the webpage and either the cookie is accepted or a privacy warning is issued to the viewer.

But it does have some weaknesses.
1) It is voluntary and
2) The information is not verified by any agency.

==============================================

Somewhat off-topic, some sites drop additional programs when we download files. These hog memory, disk space and processing power.

These programs are not considered viruses since they do no damage to your computer. Yet, they can slow your computer to a crawl, hog memory so that some programs will no longer load and use up valuable hard drive space.

For those who haven't done so, I would strongly suggest using Ad-aware found at www.lavasoftusa.com.

There are other sites (I think the home site is in Germany at www.lavasoft.de).

It is free and comes in many Languages.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. I run it every month to clean up my computer.

EDIT For the first time user, do not be surprised if you have a lot of these programs to delete... a 100 is not unusual. I have heard of over 800! It is safe and reliable.

EDIT And it is very easy to use

Yes, I agree whole heartedly with tbontob. Adaware is a great program. I use it alot and it helps keep my computer running at peak efficiancy. A friend of mine who is a computer technician introduced me to this program and we ran it on my mothers computer. It turned up around 500 or so. we cleaned them up and her computer runs alot better now.
So I, along with tbontob, strongly recommend using that program.

I have a question:

I'm using IE6 and I have a couple of web addresses that are permanently affixed in the address history when autocomplete is on for months now, regardless of how many times I've cleared files, history and cookies etc...what the hell is up with that? How did I banish them for good!?

I'm going to guess that they aren't the Educational type sites

Cookies won't do it, but clearing history, close the browser, then reopen it works for me.

Captn Kwok

I found this under the help nenu...
=================================
To delete Autocomplete entries from the Address bar list

The AutoComplete feature saves previous entries you've made for Web addresses, forms, and passwords. To delete entries from the Address bar, you must clear your History folder. You cannot clear individual entries from the list of saved entries.

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under History, click Clear History.
Notes

When typing information in Web forms, and typing passwords, you can remove an item from the list of suggestions by clicking the item and then pressing the DELETE key.
For Help on an item, click at the top of the dialog box, and then click the item.

No, I don't think you understand.

It is not the normal clear history, autocomplete, etc, thing - I've tried a gazillion times and that doesn't work. They have been around for months now and won't leave.

They don't show up after I've cleared the history etc, until I type "http://www.c " then it autocompletes with "http://www.cbs/primetime/bigbrother" when it shouldn't since the history file is empty.

Hmmmm

Wonder what would happen if you set the "number of days to keep in history" to 0, and then type "http://www.c "

And people ask me why I don't use IE! Just one of those nice little presents given to you by MS I'm betting.
