Another fav of mine - tho not technically a good artifact - is the Stone Sword. Love it! If you use it just right its a devastating weapon.
How may i ask do you use it "just right"?
Make sure you put it on a 30+ MR SC.

I think I prefer stone sword to magebane as well. The stone sword is simply awesome in battle. A Tartarian starts with 18 or so MR, so its not too hard to get 30+ MR.

I've found myself really wishing I had the alchemist's stone when Utterdark was cast.

Sandels of the Crane are the most useless IMHO. I can't envision any circumstance I'd ever use them.

Oh, don't discount the Stone Sword, Cor. Its quite powerful, even if it is extremely dangerous. As meglobob suggests you can bump up the MR of your SC till its practically impossible to kill with it. Or, you can use (more or less) throwaway SCs. My particular favorite was Harbingers cause they are cheap, start with good MR, and if you can summon them you can easily forge an AMA. You just have to assume that they will die within like 5 battles or so and have someone there to catch the sword when it falls.

Sandels of the Crane -
1) a poison golem wearing jade armor and wielding a banner of the damned
2) A decently outfitted mummy
3) A moderately tough guy with good reinvig who casts a few nasty battlefield enchantments then pops around unscripted casting some of those nasty short range spells.

Sure, it's not foolproof, but for 5S it's got it's uses.

In all those cases I'd rather put somehting else on the wearer.

Even a guy with a bladder-stick can do lots of damage. In fact I prefer that to a poison golem. The golem puts out a cloud no matter where he lands (even in your own troops) but a bladder stick only clouds if there is someone standing there for the guy to hit. There are a number of good area affect items, and even spells, which can have a great combat effect with the crane sandals.

Items which toss out units can be good to give the crane guy also. Popping all over the battlefield and dropping a couple of units in each spot can mess up good formation planning by the other guy.

Its been particularly handy when going up against a well defended castle.

The sandals of the crane can land the commander/mage in a deadly scenario of the wrong batch of enemies. If using the sandels of the crane then I'd recommend a commander/mage which has ritual of returning and enough hitpoints to take a 15hitpoint blow.

Blow of war! Ha!

I am a sucker for the pocket lich, the headless holburg, the pocket knight, and Nethgul or whatever.
