Nope it seems to target a square. You can easily make etherial armies.

Cool. Of course since I am playing Pythium in an MP game right now I wouldnt actually TRY this strat immediately...err

If it is before turn 20 you should try it out. It makes great use your your Acolytes.

After turn 20 or so you have better things to do with your casters. But before then I find that this really helps expansion.
