Well, Turn 88 it is, and my empire is tetering on the edge of oblivion...

I have managed to catch and destroy all but one of the old set of raider fleets Slynky sent through with his openers. The Last one is now bottled in an already dead system. Unfortunately he has just pushed another through in a different spot.

THe massive damage - must have been at least 50 colonies that he glassed or I abandoned - lead to uncontrollable rioting and at one point a -300 000 min debt. This occured just as my own 4 open/close ships appeared - if only 5 turns earlier .

I am now returning to positive mins but it may be too late. I have a few tricks left but it will depend on what happens in a few turns.

I am wondering now given the similarity in speeds whether I should have bothered to chase the raider fleets at all. In retrospect they might have been better joining the counter attack and having a race between us both. What are other's experience of this dilema?

I was far too defensive and reactionary in this game and have been tail chasing for the Last 20 turns - at least I have learnt a lot from this one, and it not even over yet!

Well, in my experience with raiders it isn't cost-effecive to chase them. I tied Geo down for a LONG time that way.

build weapon platforms instead. Raiding fleets genneraly don't have enough oomp to get past a decent set of platforms, and you free up your mobile forces for attacking.

Year: 2409.4 - Joachim surrenders

For many many turns, Joachim's fleets readily outdid mine so I turned to a way to get past him--Stellar Manip. I worried it would be too late but it seemed he was being cautious. I had already seen he was fielding battleships while I had LCs. . Even without bats, and not too big of a racial difference in fighting, I was getting pasted pretty well. When I lost a fleet trained at 20% and ships at various levels of training, I knew there was only one way out.

I didn't say so back at the other Messages but, if you can believe it, my first opener off the line (100 sectors) couldn't reach from ANY of my colonies accross space to any of his systems! I thought that was the end as I then needed to get the next level (200 sectors) and I never had more than 155k in research the whole game till the Last 3 turns.

I think I was ready to counter any "Riot Run" you may have put together, Joachim. When your "Hail Mary" crushed my defensive point, I shifted my the forward third of my empire to getting ready for it. What was on my side was you had no panels and I did. So, I started putting mines over every planet...I knew you could sweep 100 with the fleet you had but this would keep it from breaking up and spreading out. Second, I built the heck out of platforms. The critical places had, when I stopped, about 5 or 6 small platforms and 3 or 4 medium platforms. Engine killers, etc. I was going to make it as painful as possible for you to run around. Even the 3 fac places had 1 long-reaching medium platform on them. Thirdly, I put troops on just about any planet that wasn't doing something. Only 2 planets ever rioted...and that was in the system you sat in for a while.

One of the good things about the Balance Mod and getting stellar manip...I started building Monolith facs in all the places in the rear. At the end of the game, I had around 1.4 million minerals and about 300k in rads and orgs. As the surrender came around, I had 55 dreadnoughts at various levels of completion (and about 20 other kinds of support ships). That and about 400 ships in service.

You played a heck of a game! A thrill ride...coming close the the most thrilling game I ever played, the one where each of us (MarkW and I) had openers and closers and were ripping each other up. And, as usual, you must have expanded and handled your empire much better than I did as I was second most of the time up till I had spent several turns in your "back country" after opening holes.

My hat off to you, sir !

It was a most fine game. I was too defensive in the mid game when I had the advantage of BBs over your LCs. I also completely forgot about stellar -I guess it is a product of not having any one on one games get to openers/closes before, it didn't enter my calculations until too late. And having you break in and send nearly all my planets into riot as the first 4 stellar ships came off the line was very depressing - damn maintenance.

The balance mod and map size also gives more production and more predictable production. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. I certainly dont like the predictability it gives, you know that every system will have 1 breathable and 3 others. It also means that raiding attacks like your are always the choice strategy - this is because you know you will be going into an inhabited system every time and you dont need to worry about entering a nebula or worse black hole. This makes defending against raiders really hard, mines are useless and you need a lot of WPs to stop a fleet of 20 BBs with repair and panel support.

I am also still torn about how to colonise the balance mod. What order of planets? Colonise a system completely or keep going?

Still, great game, I enjoyed it a lot. The highlight for me is still Yabby 003 killing your stellar ship after hiding in the storm for what must have been 30 or 40 turns - Still think you should have let it live and escape back into the storm!

Thanks for the excellent game Slynky, I look forward to meeting you again....

As to colonizing, you seemed to do really well getting tech advantage on me early as well as mineral advantage, I suspect.

Mines are pretty much useless in middle to later part of game anyway. I kept using them to make sure you couldn't split your (potential) invading fleet into 3 or 4 small ones and glass many more planets. But that's about it for them. The same goes with fighters but knowing I had them, and in some places in the hundreds, kept you honest (using slots on your ship for PD) becasue you never knew when you'd find a nice fighter group.

Yes, I should have "honored" the crew of Yabby V. Only problem was allowing it to spy on me AND I had a warp closer in the same system...get me once, fine, get me twice and I'd have to surrender in humiliation... .
