Didn't the Genesis Device create a planet out of a Nebula?

I haven't tested it yet, so the change atmosphere may not work, won't know til I try

And if I recall correctly, it reformed the energy matrix of a barren rock type planet/moon.

I thought it created a whole solar system out of the nebula (ie. star + at least one planet)

Ok, let me put on my Trek-nobabble hat here.

IIRC the Genesis device was designed to reform a barren world into one with life on it. However at the end of ST:WOK, the genesis device was activated inside the Mutara nebula, which caused a star to form. Kahn was not following the manufacturer's recomended procedures at the time.

It should be noted that the genesis device could also transform a world that was *not* entirely barren into something useful. Which is why Chekov and his captain were searching for life on Ceti Alpha 5.

Nope, it was already the Ceti Alpha star system. It just created "the Genesis planet" there, which blew up shortly thereafter.
