Perhaps not? I'd thought that was the reason "attack rear" didn't always work. Even for fliers.

There's certainly some mechanism determining whether they reach the rear or not.

I understood another way, but I don't really remember. I thought the squad with the "attack rearmost" command starts considering the last unit and does some check about it - the smallest it is (like an unprotected mage), the biggest the chances they do not target it first. If they don't, they do the same check on the second rearmost and so on. But I really don't remember what the check was based on.

Morale has something to do with attack rearmost.
