I think there is a limint to the number of components. I had creaqted a number of pirate components and a lot did not show up until I reduced the number of them. I don't know what the limit would be but IIRC I could only get ~320 components to show up in the component window when creating a ship.

There is definitely a limit, but it is for sure going to be a power of 2, likely a power of 2^8= 1 byte.
1 byte =2^8= 256
2 bytes = 2^16 = 64k = 65,536

Might the problem be in the component window itself? Did you try using the "only show latest" button? That would determine whether it is the window not showing all the components, or the components not getting loaded.
Also, Component cut-off is usually due to extra blank lines in the text file.

When I was making my Mega Mod i had 652 components and they all showed up. You most likely have an extra line somewhere that makes game ignore all following entries.

Crystalline races should be getting more expensive mineral-based components, with say, 3x the hitpoints (for non-armor components)

Just make 4 copies of most of the components - SE4 shouldn't mind until you get up to 32k or 64k components (since it's past 256 already, its likely integer based or better)
- one copy is normal, the others are resouce specific (more Minerals/ all organic / all radioactives)

Any other general changes you think of could be added in the same way.

Note that those changes above might encourage trade, since each race will be specializing in one resource, they can trade for the other two, at a net gain for both sides.

That might be pretty cool, would take a lot of editing not only to the components but also the two files that set up what planets the AI chooses to colonize and what colony type it will make that planet. The other thing is will the AI actually be able to realize it's in its best interest to trade?

AFAIK, the AI has never initiated a trade, but will accept any deal it considers fair (easiest to do by offering resources 1 to 1)

Still, the AI never trades now, but still works out OK in the mineral-centered standard universe.

For an organic/radioactives heavy race, just swap the mineral & radioactives settings, do some fine tuning later, & they should do OK.
