Well actually those "bands" aren't really ment to protude off the hull that much, I may bump map them though and see how that looks.

Bumpmaps don't change the geometry of something. It appears to, however, because it alters how shadows are projected, as well as reflections.

No but considering that red "ring" is simply another part of the hull and is not supposed to be a seperate peice of it I hink just bumping it and making i stand off a little bit more would be suitable right now as I don't want to make it a whole new "peice" of ship.
