Default repeatable range check error in demo

I thought I'd give the demo of SE4G a go since we're all looking for a turn based game a bit more varied than Stars, and this looked good...

However, running through the tutorial, I get to the point where I have built a ship and try to move it through the warp, but as soon as I click on the warp gate the game freezes with a range check error. I've tried this several times now.

I also then tried actually starting a game, building a ship and trying to move it. Again, as soon as I select either move or warp and click on a destination.. range check error.

Any ideas?

Obviously it isn't something with the demo itself or something so obvious would hopefully have been fixed by now! However, it does put me off actually buying the game, particularly since a search on this forum has shown a fair amount of crashing in the full Version..

My system is win2k, Athlon1100, 512Mb, Geforce2Ultra gfx card - can't think of anything else relevant.

Unrelated question. (Note: I am NOT trying to pirate the game!)
Do I need to buy one copy for each computer if I want to have a 3 or 4 player LAN game, or will one copy work on multiple machines? (Stars! for instance had license number packs so you could buy an 8-user pack far more cheaply than buying 8 individual copies).

You only need one copy; SE IV only requires the CD if you want to play the background music. There are some quirks to getting LAN play to work, but I haven't tried it and can't find the threads that discussed it.

Thanks for the replies - oddly its working fine today, don't know why it was crashing before, but it was completely repeatable, every time...
Must have been something else I was doing with my computer at the same time!

Thanks again... will get back to trying the game out!

Try normal game start, not tutorial. Something may be wrong with tutorial scenario. SE IV can produce RCE late in the game, when too many ships and fighters (especialy) are in combat. Personaly, I never had RCE even though I played SE IV from the moment it has been released.

Ooh, sorry, you did try normal start. Then i have no idea.
