Default "stargate" mod ?

I always thought that SE IV layout is not really suitable for "space empires". Strictly speaking, there is no interstellar travel in itself, just instantenious jumps across the galaxy. IMHO Homeworld, MOO (1/2), Starfleet Command, etc model space travel much better.

In fact, I often ponder that SE IV could be made much more "realistic" and "belivable" if you think of the star system as just one planet (with the appropriate background picture)instead and replace planets and asteroids with cities and landscape features. Wormholes would become some sort of "Stargates" linking planets. One can send you exploration and military teams through them (aka SE IV ships). It would also explain why space battles are 2-dimensional, since now they would commence on planet. One will still need troops (infantry) to assault enemy cities which are protected with entranched weapon platforms and air cover (satellites and fighters). Planet destroying weapons will become simple nukes.

What do you think about such kind of mod ?

Idle curiosity: Oleg

Are you the same oleg that was on the Soviet Army/History forum who had his Posts lifted to the THC WWII forum Last year?

A very interesting idea. It would certainly make the game very different, almost a new game entirely .

Another suggestion for you: increase the number of storms around, turning them into forests, swamps, deserts, oceans, etc.

If you could get some arial pictures of various terrain from somwhere, it would look really cool

No, not me. Oleg is a rather common russian name, like John in English.

Nice Idea.

One suggestion:

Since in the movie, all stellar travel is predecated by the StarGate, I would redo the tech tree so that WP opening tech (which is now a part of Stellar manip), be separated and possibly more levels added.

Then create maps with no WPs connected. First you can only reach systems within 50 light years...and on up to 500 or 1000...whatever the MAX size of the galaxy is.

I know that isn't completely faithful to the movie, but it would make the system more SE4 like. Too bad, WPs aren't time sensitive and you could create one that would only stay open for a short time...simulating this even more.

And most likely, the AI would have a hell of a time coping...

Very cool idea I do believe someone had mentioned this possibility before (prehaphs it was even you) - making it into a 'ground' based game. I would take a bit of time, and you would need to find a bunch of art files. Asteroids may make better swamps and forests as during combat they would be scattered about the screen.

The stargate building technology should definitely be separated, long, and expensive.

I agree completely with the tech, just not the starting galaxy setup.
To start everything out with no Stargates goes against the SG feel, IMO. The stargates should be monolithic "since the beginning of time" devices.
Basically, just pretend the advanced races were all killed off, or thrown back into the industrial age so that everyone gets a fair start, and let them explore the stargate network.
