Question Artillery Spotting

I'm playing the Germans in scenario 272. No matter which unit I use to call in artillery, even the artillery VB, the screen says that A0 is the spotting unit and the map on the artillery screen shows the observed hexes as being from A0. Why is that?

Lets see - little experiment.

- fire up the game
- choose that scenario & start it
- figure out who is the observer, on the roster
- select unit B0
- Open the bombardment screen
- B0 is shown as the spotter, with correct vision arc.

My guess is that you did not select the spotter before opening the bombardment screen?

That's a very flat map.
It could be neither the AO or Foo has an LOS in which case the one with the better arty call ability may do it is my guess.

At any case, the A0 is just about as good a the FO in calling in arty (when out of LOS) in scenarios and single battles.

Exception to that "if" the designer made the FO more experinced and/or if the FO has good LOS and not suppressed, then you get the full benefit of a FO class.

I tried Andys experiment and got the same results.... select B0 then open the bombardment screen and B0 is your spotter.

It works fine when the scenario is first started and also when it's resumed from a save. My incident happened at the end of a particularly long play session (over 4 hours). I haven't had the time to see if I could get it to repeat.

There were other peculiar things happening as well. The map would pan over to where engineers were working but there would be no status messages. I could see that something was going on because mines would disappear from the map. I suspect that the size of the scenario has something to do with it because I haven't run into these problems in any other scenario.
