Default Seeking info on .50 cal SLAP ammo

Looking over the OOB (specifically OOB #13 USMC) I note that weapon #6 (M82 Sniper Rifle) is given an AP value of 2, presumedly this represents SLAP ammo. But weapon #27 (M2HB HMG (SLAP)) is given an AP value of 4.

What's the "correct" AP value for .50 cal SLAP ammo?

Do you know if the SLAP ammo is actually fielded with M82 sniper rifles? From other similar sources to the one you posted I've gotten the impression that the M903/M962 are only to be used with the M2 family of machine guns.

This is where having access to an M82/M107 operator manual would be useful.

After a little digging I came up with this :

http://www.olive-drab.com/od_other_f..._rifle_m82.php

Part of it says "Use of the .50 cal SLAP (Saboted Light Armor Penetrator) round is specifically forbidden due to hazards associated with such use."

So I guess that answers that question.

I can't help but wonder if this has something to do with the way the sabot is designed and the M82/M107's muzzle brake.

http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/i...ifle/M107.html

According to that website, the M82/M107 can only use:

* MK211 Mod 0, Caliber .50 API Cartridge
* M33, Caliber .50 Ball Cartridge
* M17, Caliber .50 Tracer Cartridge
* M8, Caliber .50 API Cartridge
* M20, Caliber .50 APIT Cartridge
* M1A1, Caliber .50 Blank Cartridge

While also giving the penetration of the M903 SLAP round @ 34mm @ 500m, and 23mm @ 1,200m.

Ahh, good.
Those actual penetration numbers was what I wasn't able to find.
I see the standard M2 Armor Piercing round is listed as 19mm @ 500m and 10mm @ 1,200m.
can one of you tech detail guru's translate these into "AP Penetration" for me?

In my opinion the .50 caliber, 12.7mm, and 14.5mm heavy machine guns should be a bit more capable at penetrating vehicles. With the proper AP ammo the M2 Browning could penetrate most BTRs, BMDs, and the sides of BMPs (including the BMP-3) unless additional armor is fitted.

To descriptions to BMP-1 and BMP-2 - it is written that them armour can to protect them about splinters of shells, bullets and small-caliber shells autocannons. I think that it fairly for front and side armour - though is not assured.
In description BMP-3 - it is written that it armour maintains any shots from machine guns on a circle - front, side and rear. And front armour maintains sabot shells 30mm from penetration from distance of 300 metres.

The front armor on the BMP-1 and BMP-2 can withstand hits from those things but I have read that sides and rear can be penetrated by .50 caliber armor piercing ammo and other heavy machine guns.

The BMP-3 has better front armor and is capable of withstanding 20mm, 23mm, and at ranges of 400 meters or greater 30mm AP (not modern APFSDS however.) In an effort to keep a low weight however the sides are not much better than earlier BMPs.

There is an add-on side passive armor kit which protects from .50 caliber AP fire. Also the reactive armor kit provides protection from .50 cal AP fire and can defeat single charge HEAT weapons and 30mm APFSDS (but the ERA block would be destroyed in the process.)

Russian 14.5mm machine guns should be capable of penetrating M113s and the sides of a few other vehicles unless add-on armor is fitted.

Then why were appliqu kits for the side armor issued in Afghanistan? It was vulnerable to HMG fire on the sides, that's why. Remember that it was supposed to float as well so trade offs in the armor schemes had to be made somewhere.
