World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Been playing "World In Conflict" a new RTS out, which posits a Soviet invasion of the US in 1989. Yes, I know it's incredibly far fetched, but the game does a very good job of making it very real, like ZSU-23-4s shooting down TV news helicopters in cutscenes
And of course, there's always that 1980s classic Red Dawn, WOLVERINES! for inspiration.
I might try my hand at making some WIC themed scenarios in the future, just for the insanity of it all.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Obviously enough I'll be interested with any such scenarios...
I was considering some kind of Alaskan invasion scenario for the CWmod at some point, dunno how far-fetched that would be, strategically speaking.
Certainly less than Ilyushins sowing paratroopers over the Seattle suburbs in a cloud of SAMs like it was 1944 all over again...
If there are interesting battles in the WIC campaigns (not to mention upcoming mods), they sure could be worth the adaptation.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
In my miniatures days, I did a quick research project for Red Dawn - the Soviets have to take Winnipeg, Manitoba to base their transport AC out of. Isolated, good runways, lightly defended, within reach of AC flying out of northern Soviet bases.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Kinda got the impression they were flying in from Cuba from Red Dawn. Still too far for the aircraft to reach I'm fairly sure.

From IMDB:
"It is the mid-1980s. From out of the sky, Soviet & Cuban troops begin landing on the football field of a Colorado high school."
A bit of a long flight from Havannah to Colorado However I do remember some 80's or 90's SF where LPG tankers were converted to carry Hinds.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
The whole landing-from-tankers scheme has apparently been put to good use in WIC as well...
Not that the Soviet power projection abilities left much in the way of alternatives even in the 80s.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC) were used by the Soviet military as helicopter carriers in Daniel daCruz's THE AYES OF TEXAS. (Secondary bad-pun title was apparently rejected for the sequel, TEXAS ON THE ROCKS, about iceberg-herding.)
Dean Ing had an enemy jet (can't recall if it was Chinese or Indian) stooging about over Texas in SYSTEMIC SHOCK, but I disremember the originating source - I know there were supertanker shenanigans elsewhere in the story, but I believe those were the only ones.
TWILIGHT 2000 would be a good source for ideas - RED STAR, LONE STAR has the remnants of a major Soviet armoured force loitering around. (What *is* it with Texas and invasions?)T2k is best suited for small-unit actions, however, the "historical" details might produce interesting battles/campaigns. (The RDF SOURCEBOOK is going to be used heavily if I ever get around to working on my early-'80s Sov invasion of Dallas.. uhm, "Iran". <G>)

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Twilight 2000 is all a bit dystopic though isn't it. I'd prefer scenarios without Nuclear wastelands and roving bands of soldiers. The earlier stuff would be better.
As for actions within the US, quite unlikely to ever be the case. The delivery methods are there but I think even the most idiotic port official (anywhere in the States) would be a bit concerned about that much hardware showing up in his backyard. Alaska is a good idea perhaps Canada too.

Re: World in Conflict/Red Dawn themed Scenarios
Having said that Red Dawn was a good, albeit cliche, movie. I did a small scenario, just for fun, losely based on that. Winter in some small American town with a few Shilkas, Light APCs, T-80s, couple of Hinds and reserve/MP type troops. The US had A-10s some SEALS and Rangers plus a load of random partisans. The game begins with two ambushes at either end of town and the Russians have to react. Main targets are the town train station, the mayor's house and police station and various ammo/re-supply dumps. Quite playable but not quite ready to be submited.
