Default Fullscreen not working

This is something that I experience in both SPWW2 and SPMBT.

When I try to play fullscreen, I get a messagebox saying "IpDD->SetDisplayMode() failed, code 80004001".

This is under Vista, ATI catalyst version 7.6

I assume this is a problem with Aero / Dx10. Is there another patch planned? Windowed mode works, but fullscreen would be much better.

The full screen modes the game supports must be supported by the hardware & your video drivers. This not much of a problem with a CRT monitor (CRTs can rescale) but can be on a flat screen LCD (LCDs do not tend to rescale, or can do it at a fuzzy interpolated mode).

The most likely reason for your DirectX error would be trying to run a LCD monitor at the wrong resolution in full screen mode. For example are you trying to run a 1280x800 native wide screen LCD at perhaps 1280x1024 normal Windows mode?.

Windowed mode allows rescaling (assuming you have the CD version for those over 800 mode) on some of these wide-screen lcd screens that depart from windows standard pixel formats. The game will fit to the 1280x800 desktop, by chopping off the lower part of the 1280x1024 windows-standard display to fit.

The next problem may be Vista. As neither Don or I have vista machines, it is not a supported operating system. You may well be able to run the game on it at your own risk, but it could have hiccups.

Cheers
Andy

Well, fullscreen worked on my old Win 2000 machine and the same monitor (LCD, 1280x1024 desktop, game resolution 800x600), so it looks like Vista / Dx10 have a problem with changing the resolution.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that a DirectX update will fix this...

It is not DX10 or whatever Vista ships with - as others have run the game fine on vista boxes. Including running in 1280 mode on 1280 by 800 wide-screen laptops and the game fitting to the desktop (less task bar at the bottom) as usual.

So it looks like a driver issue then, in trying to interpolate 800 mode onto a 1280 native pixel screen. A later driver update may fix this (if you are lucky, and whenever the driver writers get round to it, which sometimes for older hardware they dont). The other method to fix it would be to buy the CD version of the game and drive it in 1280x1024 mode native !

Cheers
Andy

'Older hardware'...

ATI HD2900XT, so, yes, I suppose there will be quite a few driver updates in the future.

Just an update:

With current (7.8) Catalyst, fullscreen works fine.

Dear reverend,

I have the same problem.
On my Nvidia card it runs very sluggish in fullscreen mode.
The newest driver is installed.
Did you additionally change the configuration file of winspmbt ? I have tried several options but it won't run as smooth as in Windows XP. LCD Scaling works (resolution is 800x600 as it should be).

Thanks.

No, I didn't change anything in the configuration file.

On slow downs: It does seem to run just a bit slower, but not really noticeable. The only thing I noticed was that fullscreen seems to use a lot more CPU for some reason. My fans run at their normal speed when playing windowed, but fullscreen they rev up to keep everything cool.
