Default Question about restrictions on Space Yards

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't find anything.

I'm looking into modding the files so that there is a size limit to the ships that you can build on a planet based Ship Yard.
Large ships would only be capable of being build by a Space Station Ship Yard. Plus, it would be a major research undertaking to get Space Station level 1.

I thought this would add a bit of realism, it's how all SciFi series deal with the building of hugh cap ships. Just consider the environmental damage from that Cruiser taking off.

What I want to know from all those modding veterans out there is:

Is it possible? (I guess I would have to split the Ship Yards into two classes to prevent upgrade problems)

Would it cause major problems with AI? (i.e. The computer refusing to build Space Base Ship Yards and therefore being limited to smaller ships all game!)

And finally, is it worth bothering and do you guys have any comments/suggestions?

The questions is: "Is it probable?". It's always possible.

Yes. Although the AI already builds basespaceyards it would be a challange to tell it NOT to build ships at the planetary space yards (since that would only produce inferior ships).

One question for you, though:

If you can't build large ships at the planetary spaceyards, how come you can build a basespaceyard on planets?

The planetary space yards could actually be located in orbit.

I had always just assumed that planet based construction yards were just launcing parts into orbit and assembling them there.

As far as I know there's no way to limit the ship sizes a SY can build by only editing text files. New abilities/restricition would need to be hardcoded.

I believe ships are built in the planet. That's why they can be built even if the planet is blockaded. They must use some kind of anti-gravitational lift (the same used to put sat on orbit?) make them leave witho
