DD(X) 155mm AGS from 2008 onwards for USMC?

Is this going to be in the next patch?

Sorry if I'm being a bit pedantic; but this is a key point in the USNs/USMCs future plans for amphibious or over the horizon forced landings. It's a quite interesting system, in that this is NOT your normal 155mm shell. It may have a bore diameter of 155mm, but the designers made the shell significantly LONGER, making it perform like an 8" shell:

155 mm/62 (6.1") AGS
260 lb shell weight, with 23.8 lbs burster charge

8"/55 (20.3 cm) Marks 12 and 15
260 lb shell weight, with 21.3 lbs burster charge

So it hits with the force of an 8" shell.

What's also interesting is that the AGS will have 100% guided shells; the purely ballistic shell was cancelled a while back.

And what source do you want to use to support that this will be available from 2008 onward ??

Let's see... one I found says....." Ballistic round development for AGS has been reportedly postponed or cancelled and none of the existing US Army or NATO 155 mm projectiles can be adapted for use in AGS."

and all globalsecurity will say is "AGS is a 155mm Gun Weapon System planned for installation in the DD-21 Land-Attack Destroyers "

and then there's this from the Libray of Congress

"EXTENDING THE CONSTRUCTION PERFORMANCE PERIOD

The Navy determined that the original five year performance period (fiscal year 2004 through fiscal 2008) for building the first DD-21 would result in unacceptable risk for successful completion of the program. Therefore, the Navy budget supports a two year delay in the delivery of DD-21 (from fiscal year 2008 to fiscal year 2010). "

and those are the boats the guns are going into.

You give me a credable source that says this will be up and running in 2008 and I'll look into it.

Well, the program has been renamed from DD(X) to DDG-1000, but I persist in calling it DD(X) for some crazy reason, lol.

Anyway, you do have a very good point. It appears that the schedule for delivery of DDG-1000 has experienced slippage since I last looked at it.

Oct 17/06: President George W. Bush signs the FY 2007 defense appropriations bill into law as Public Law 109-364. The final bill authorizes the buildout of 2 DDG-1000 ships.

Program Schedule as of 2006.

It appears that construction will begin in 2008 now, with final delivery in 2012 for both DDG-1000 Zumwalt and DDG-1001 (Unnamed).
