Default Phased Shields Question

I have tried looking this up and can't seem to find an answer.

I just got Phased shields level 1. They produce 70 Phased shield points per unit.
My Question is are these better than the regular Shield level that produce 300 shield points??

I know that the phased polaron beam goes through regular shields. But how does the Phased shield work against regular beams??
My enemies do not have the Phased Polaron beam. Should I keep the regular shields at 300 points or retrofit (yet again) my ships to have the Phased Shield at 70 points??

I will keep studing shields but I have a few other things to work on first.

Thanks in advance for any answers.
Happy Holidays !!

They still have 70 shield points I believe.

Phased Shield V has more shield points than Shield V, but that takes a helluva long time to research.

So, its a trade-off. Is your opponent using PPB's, or do you think he is using PPB's? Then better mount those Phased Shields, or else your ships will be butter.

Is your opponent only using conventional weapons? Then use normal shields, at least until you get to Shield III or Shield IV.

Hope that helps,

(p.s. most important thing I worked on in beginning which was not too long ago was expansion. Here's the deal -- you have to be able to build colony ships in one turn with your homeworld on emergency build. If you can't, then your race is set up wrong, goto http://www.spaceempires.net/home/mod...showpage&pid=1 . I've figured out a pretty good expansion build that involves pushing as far out as you can with colony ships with a supply mod, and trying to get one additional space yard planet set up within ten turns that is able to pump out colony ships as fast as the homeworld on emergency build of course. So by turn 20, on a three planet start, if I'm lucky, I'll have around 35 colony ships buzzing around.)

If Phased weapons are in the field, DON'T use Phased shield 1's.

Use Armor III instead, as it will give you 160 hitpoints in the same space, and cost you fewer minerals to boot.

Eventually, when you research high enough, shields will generate in excess of 300 points per component( I'm thinking about 450 but it depends on what modd you're playing).

I think phased shields IV generate 300 in stock, phased shields IV generate 375. The jump is big, but I think its only really worth it to start mounting phased shields when you have at least phased shields III. Any less than that, and if your opponent has PPB's, you should be able to outclass his ships anyway because you have hopefully been getting ECM and Combat Sensors while he's been wasting away his research on PPB's.

Thanks for the answers.
It seems that Phased shields work no better against conventional beams than normal shields.

I would like to see them have an advantage. If they can stop a PPB they should be better at stopping a normal beam.

Is there a way to mod such an affect? I would like to have something like :
Level one Stops 70 points of PPB and 140 points of conventional beams.

In the meentime I better get back to the drawing Boards and put those "old" Level V regular shields back in my ships.

SJ's Pirates and Nomads mod has a good method. It alternates noraml and phased shields in the tech tree, and each level of phased shield is weaker than the corresponding level of normal shields. So you pay a penalty for phased shields, but you don't have to research so far before they're good.

It seemes like ppb is too easy to get, but the phased shields III is a good enough defense. It's all about a mini-arms race -- who can get the weapon/defense deployed in the field quickest.

Some days I get lucky with the postings . I 'member one time ...

I was playing PBW, and was at war with someone who really knew what he was doing. He did the usual, went straight for the DUC5, light cruiser, and sent a fleet to my home system. I could barely hold him back with my APB, shield 3, battle cruisers.

'Tho I did have some fun, altering their targeting to destroy his support ships so he lost transports, repair ships, and sensor ships.

Anyway, an ally tells me a fleet of his cruisers armed with ppb were headed my way. But I had been researching shields up to phased shields III, just not building any intermediate models to not tip my hand. My under construction battleships would be ready for him.

Well, not really, he took such high aggressiveness and defensiveness that he was unhitable by me and hit me like he had a talisman. But the point was, ...

Did I have one? Oh yeah, subterfuge. That was fun.

Another method is to have 10 levels of shield generators and 10 levels of phased generators, where the phased ones require an extra tech area and have, say, 75% of the shield points of the normal generator.
