Why little moons are cool
I've noticed a few system Mods recently that have removed the little moons.
Everyone to their own, but I actually kinda like them.
Here are some of the things I've done with them in my games.
1. Colonize one, emergency build a space yard on it, emergency build a base ship yard.
2. Now you have a choice: 1) Keep the space yard(any ships you build there will have full supply one turn after they are built), 2) Scrap the space yard and build either a resupply depot or a cargo storage facility.
If you are near your front, the storage facility is pretty handy. You can stick a whole bunch of weapons platforms in it to help support your base.
Use the planet to build what I call 'Exxon' sattellites, small sats with Supply Storage componets and 2 or 3 Solar Collectors. I build 3 or so at almost all my planets anyway. Use these to refuel a ship or fleet in a pinch if you can't wait a turn for the base or don't have a resupply planet handy.
Make figters and launch them and they go a long way toward controlling the system
Anyway, I just thought these ideas might give you reasons to want to keep your little moons. I sure do.
Of course, if you are not a Rock based race, or never play as one, I guess this might give the 'Rockys' some kind of an advantage.

Re: Why little moons are cool
Add my vote to the "save the little moons" petition. I like the little buggers too.
Since often they are only good for one facility I like to use it for a resupply depot. Then I don't waste a slot on the planet. Also, when playing humans you can sometimes use them for "stealth outPosts" since nothing shows up on the main screen as long as you haven't colonized the main planet. Of course, you can't fake out the AI that way.
Has anyone run across alien ruins or tech on moons? If not, this would be a cool mod to make.

I have found both on them.

Re: Why little moons are cool
In my quadrant mods, I have even hidden moons in some asteroid belt sectors.
Tiny moons won't be deleted from my quadrants.

Re: Why little moons are cool
One thing I dislike about moons is when the enemy colonizes them and I dont see it, thus making me nuts when I see no enemy presence in the tactical view and seeing that triangle on my map. But thats okay, minor gripe. I love moons, esp. when I get the system wide facilities and I dont have anything else to colonize except for the moons.

The two will hover, spinning inches above the ground. With a giant buttered cat array, a high-speed monorail could easily link New York with Chicago.

A large planet with multiple moons can also build lots of units very fast.

I agree with this sentiment heartily. Tiny moon + CSF III = 20 Sm. Weapon Platforms. And if you've got two of these over a huge gas giant...
(For some reason I have trouble seeing "Military Installations" with anything but SY, Resupply, and CSF as unfaithful to the name... Yes, I have problems. )

Re: Why little moons are cool
I use those moons as a long-term investment as well. Build an atmospheric converter on one and wait till the atmosphere converts.
Then build a space yard and cargo facilities; or space yard, ship and fleet training center, and cargo facilities.
With advanced storage techniques, a tiny moon with a PSYIII and 5 CSFIII can build ships and hold as much cargo as a huge planet. It just won't be able to get the population bonus a huge planet can get.
(For added fun, adjust the setting of one of those moons in one of the systems and make its atmosphere be 'Any'... Then there's a chance you'll get a tiny moon with your atmosphere so you can do this early on in the game.)
Also, these moons can be Ice as well.
(I modified the systemtypes.txt file so there is a planet in the Standard 3 system with *4* moons. Fun, fun..)

I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave like this..." *waggle* "...can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?"
