Paralyze
Took down one of the computer opponents during a multiplayer game... but it was a surprising battle:
Day_60... The pretender was in his castle and level_6 water and level_2 astral. He never casted any water spells... he just kept doing paralyze. The worst part was he was able to target all my largest creatures. First my elemental king then my pretender then my Khrianic Lions.
I had over 100 stupid small units which never got targeted by his spells. In the end I did win the battle but the battle left me with questions.
2 Questions:
What can be done to stop paralyze and other astral spells?
My pretender and elemental king had very high mg-resistance yet were paralyzed instantly.
How was the computer opponent able to target large monsters with his spells?
He never paralyzed any of the hundred different weak units... his magic casts always targeted my biggest/strongest units. My spellcasters seem to select random targets.

Re: Paralyze
Uh, never tried to play R'lyeh ? Illithid Mind BLast works exactly like Paralyze, but ALL Illithid have it !
As for your Q :
1/ Dunno, it should have protected them.. Maybe the caster had some "focusing" items ?
2/ For Illithids I get the same results with "Fire Large Creatures", but indeed you can't specify spell targets... weird ... If there is a way to script spells to target large creatures I'd be glad to kow it !
Well, are you sure your foe did CAST paralyze, and wasn't Mind BLasting ?

Re: Paralyze
Some spells target the biggest enemy creatures on the field... Curse and Parayze, and maybe Mind bLast/burn type of spells too. Most insta-kills would fall on this group too, if I have understood it right.
You can't spesify who your mages fire at, but I believe in they cast those spells into big creatures too, if they are casting them at all.

Re: Paralyze
The spell Paralyze seems to have a hefty bonus to spell penetration. It works far more often than most spells that afford a magic check.

Re: Paralyze
The paralysis spell has a far, far longer duration than an Illithid mindbLast paralysis effect. It's also more effective, I suspect.
It does require astral magic, however, which opens up the field to Mind Duel.

Yes, but you can very easily get MORE bLastin'squiddies that paralyzing mages. I've been amazed at the effectiveness of squiddies, given some frontline cannon fodder to block the enemy ... but I digress..

Re: Paralyze
Well its the same with the curse-shield (dont remember name). If your pretender is present where the enemy has such a shield, he is bound to get cursed, no matter how big an army he leads.
