Re: PBW RACE TO SEV TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Alneyan is right. Researching mines is still very cheap with high tech cost. Sweepers however, become very expensive in such a game as both high level sweeping and large shipsizes wont be able until much later in the game. The 15 destroyers with level one sweepers needed to sweep 100 mines will be a serious strain on the small economies and make offensive actions virtually impossible for a while.

*Hint* Light Carrier *Hint* Even Light Carriers are expensive to maintain with a weak economy, and you would need ten of them to sweep 100 mines. Though it might work if you are using the Light Carriers are beachers.

The stone now more to his liking, the big barbarian throws away the sledgehammer and goes to the cantina for a beer.
Thanks to Tesco and the team

Re: PBW RACE TO SEV TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Damn, this is too cool. Unfortunately, looks like it'll be taking place while I'm at CMU, and I can't risk my first year on something so addictive. Oh well, at least now I have WoW.
...on the other hand, it's only one turn every once in a while, considering it's 20 players and 48 hr limit. I guess I could let the limit take care of me on those rare instances like finals week.
Arrgh, can't decide. Think I'll use July to practice some and get back into PBW.

Re: PBW RACE TO SEV TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
One thing that I found leads to an interesting (one might say "more pure") dynamic is to not allow fighters, mines, or drones. This is what I did in Zeta...I have no idea how the players feel about it, however. If I could've disallowed satellites in that, I would have done that also...
Of course, for people like me who can't design ships worth beans, such a rule would be tougher, but, hey, it's a thought...
Thanks,
Alarik

If I can however give my two cents, mines are actually very cheap to research even with High tech cost, since it only affects later technology levels while the first one costs the same. So Mines will cost 100,000 research points to get as usual with Construction, which is certainly not too difficult to get.
And if you can get a lot of trade treaties, you may very well have so many research points it isn't even funny (basically, gaining 200,000 research points isn't so uncommon in most games). I guess, however, that the early game will see the destruction of a few Empires and hopes, but it should go back to a normal game later on (ten systems are enough with treaties and good planets, if you can get the said treaties obviously).

Re: PBW RACE TO SEV TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
This is a great idea. Too bad I'll have to do my military service at next year (it'll start at the beginning of January) That means I won't be able to finish the game.
Other problem would be the fact that I don't have a credit card. Is there a big expense if I'd transfer money directly to PBW account?
