Re: I Was Ripped OFF!
The review I read in PC Gamer said the game was a lot of fun and highly addictive.

I'm amazed that PC Gamer actually had anything good to say about a strategy game, especially one lacking state-of-the-art graphics. PC Gamer is noted for catering to the twitch crowd. Have they had a change in editorial leadership recently?

Re: I Was Ripped OFF!
I would just like to chime in and say that the demo worked on me. It gave me just enough to learn what the game was about and get involved with some games. By the time I was able to max out all paths of research within the 40 turn limit, I was hungry for more.
I don't see anything wrong with a turn limit. The limit allows you to get involved in a game, but not to finish it - perfect for enticing sales. Neither do I see anything wrong with the research cap. It gives you a taste of what the magic system has to offer, while keeping tantalizing morsels just out of reach. Again, perfect for enticing sales.
Of course, it was frustrating when the AI cast Burden of Time and you couldn't Dispel it, because Dispel is a level 5 spell!

I pay absolutely no attention to a review if it says the game is good. Reviews that like that are utterly worthless, especially when coupled with a rating system that is as utterly vague as "stars". Real benchmarking is done by setting something as a reference point, then rating everything relative to that. There is no "maximum score". Such a concept is absurd, as it would imply that the game would, by definition, have to be perfect, which can't happen.
But mostly, if you see a review of a game, that says the game is good, ignore it. Only listen to reviews that are bad. People who give bad reviews are those unafraid to criticize, which is what you want out of a review. A reviewer who can't do anything but drool isn't telling you anything you didn't already suspect: Why would you even bother reading it if you weren't thinking of getting it in the first place?
No news can be good news, but good news is no news.

Likewise - back in February I checked out the demo; played about a dozen games (maybe more - some of the early ones didn't get to turn 40 ) and definately knew I wanted it. I think the Last game or two, I was actually winning by turn 40 (Jotuns), and trying to race to win by 40 on Aran.
Yes, I sometimes wished research wasn't capped at Lvl 4 (now I wish you could set a cap on magic research level in the full game ), and was definately bummed at the game ending at 40, on the couple of games I was like "10 ... more turns! I could win in ... 10 more turns!" But it's a demo - you don't expect the whole game, full features, etc. I wanted ... the other races; the other maps (the two in the demo get old fast, albeit Aran isn't bad for SP); the higher magics, the thrill of getting my butt kicked, the agony of victory.
Great demo - I loved it so much, I bought the company. Ahem - I mean, I bought the game the day I was laid off.

Re: I Was Ripped OFF!
The claim most of you make regarding demo limits is that without them people will make do with only the demo and won't buy the game.
I guess for me its not an option, if I really like the demo I'll get the game, I won't stick to a cripled watered down box free Version of it.
I guess Im just different from the average Joe then...

Also you can still netplay with your friends, only you have to finish or upgrade in 40 turns.

That's true, but our Dom1 games Lasted well unto turn 80, after which three of them (not including me) upgraded to full Version. I have yet to convince one of the not-preordered DomII players to upgrade.
It's probably just me, but I feel better for paying for games that satisfy me deeply after finishing them. Then again, I am one of those who actually paid for some shareware games, even those that did not have any restrictions. If they were good enough.
It's the same with boardgames, for me. If a friend owns a really cool boardgame that I like to play, I buy it myself, too... even though I am only going to play it with that friend.
I honestly admit to not being average marketing material, though, which means that I understand not having any opinion that counts in this.
Oh, and yes, that's me, JO. Spelling is very nearly correct, too. Have you been so traumatized by my newbie Ermor For Beginners guide that you still remember me?

Oh, wow. If that doesn't get me a few five-stars-votes, I don't know what. *smirk*

Actually what I recalled was you signing up to several of the first dom 1 under the name Karacan. Glad to see you still play. You were one of the very first player to be vocal and ardent enough make a Lasting memory. I have obviously seen your name around here but it was just yesterday I recalled that Bjrn Lsing used to play under the name Karacan.
