I think it's 255, but anything after about 20 or so and the other players can't see the rest of the name. Kind of frustrating actually. I played against a guy once who liked to do that. All his ships names had like 40 letters, and all but the Last 5 were the same, so I couldn't tell what kind of a ship it was.
