Not to complicate things, but I've successfully used alt+f4 to close SE4 several times.

umm, i meant from the very first window you get when starting SEIV - the one with the picture, quick start, new game, resume game etc.

umm no jack, this is not true for me, im not playing this game alot.. i was just trying something with racial setup and just kept pressing alt+f4 till i get out of the game -- and discovered the bug! lol

yea i can see what you mean from my previous reply, that was a little too serious - im in a wierd mood tonight. and your right, i HAVE played the game a little too much and can be considered seriously addicted

(though i believe i am lucky to avoid any withdrawals when anything happens)
