Anyway, am I simply re-inventing the wheel here with this bug I've stumbled on, am I the only one dealing with it, or is this just me who's having this problem? External replication of this problem would be comforting insofar as it would let me know that I'm not totally insane.

It would be the HCl since two moles of it would be needed to react in full with Mg.
