Default Speed?

What exactly do the speed ratings do?

My away team is rated as below average in speed since I'm carrying a heavy eviscerator with a speed rating of -60.

My ship is rated as above average since I have two or more components with speed boosts.

But I can't tell the difference. It's a turn-based game. You always go one square per turn.

What am I missing? Does high speed permit a ship to outrun an opponent? How can that be? Does the opponent lose turns?

This is of interest to me today, since I'm done with questing and spelunking and scrounging commodities for awhile and intend to just keep jumping to above sector 100, looking for trouble.

I know that some critters (birds, for example), move 2 squares and often get a first strike. I have also seen some ships able to outrun mine. Although I am not certain, I think this means that speed may give you 2 moves to your opponent's one, even though each move is done one at a time. Also, you may get first strike if you are significantly faster than opponent.

Ibol covered this in a previous post on the question here.

Basically it comes into play in determining who goes first and how often during a turn.

In other words, the higher your speed is, the more often you get a turn.

But what you can do during a single turn remains the same.
