Re: Do you use CBM?
The awe was indeed an attempt to find a thematic way to buff the previously alnost-useless nagas. Their uselessness seemed a shame given that they are the focus of the nation (Patala). If you read their descriptions it says a lot about how they are otherworldly, and bedecked in glittering jewelry. Snakes are also well known for their (mythical?) ability to hypnotise weak-minded beings, so the change seemed to me to fit in very nicely.
All Pale Ones got general buffs to hp and strength, and very slight buffs to natural protection. Pale Ones are pretty awful all round. One option would be to up their attack and defense, but I really didn't want to do that - their rubbish combat skills are part of what makes them unique. It's even a part of their tragic theme (they *really* shouldn't have emerged to fight a war on the surface). But they are already thick-skinned, tough and strong, so emphasising those traits seemed like a good approach to me.
The mountain survival was before my time but seems to make sense to me. They live among rocks and caves, and you could generalise and say lots of mountains have caves, and wherever there are caves the Agarthans have a big mobility advantage.
All the other changes are from before my time, but kianduatha's explanations sound good to me.

Re: Do you use CBM?
The thing I dislike most about CBM is the constant minor changes. Recent example is ashdod sacreds having a minor encumberance change. The 'spill over' effects of this is quite large, so I tweak scales, but then the productivity scale has been changed. So I consider another pretender and blahblahblahblah
Mod should be re-christianed competitive balance mod, make a few minor changes (strip out gem gens), then only work on fixing underpowered nations. IMHO YMMV HTH HAND

That 'minor' encumbrance change was not intended to be minor. It was a major intentional balance tweak, that directly addressed one of the major imbalancing problems with Ashdod.

Re: Do you use CBM?
A lot of this is also available ingame. You should notice changes when you do a new pretender testrun.

Re: Do you use CBM?
Nobody really plays Ashdod, I think they might even be a bit underpowered right now. One of that nationspells is useless (whee 50+ dgems for units you cannot GoR, and you lose a mage). Encumberance that forces you to take e8+ if you go with sacreds, etc.
And with the dreadful reputation they have it is a diplomatic nightmare to play ashdod. Lets call it the Baalz factor.
Quick we must gank Ashdod/Baalz because he is so powerful!
