Sometimes assassination spells (direct damage or conjured creature attacks) seem to miss stealthy units. Is this due to them being stealthy, or some other factor like being ethereal? And if so, what is the chance of failure?
If it's a stealth unit, and it is hiding or sneaking, it will not get targeted by a spell that affects just a single commander. So no seeking arrows or assassination spells.
You can hit the province with province-affecting unit-damage spells like flames from the sky, etc. That will affect sneaking/hiding commanders.

Oops sorry, yes of course that's right, as many an innocent wandering scout fears the day he will take the hit for the intended target.
