Default Disappearing resources

I keep having a problem with resources in a few of my provinces going to zero. Is this because of some spell an opponent is casting? Or is it just something that happens? And is there any way to build resources once they are lost?

I'd put money on those provinces having recently had castles built next door to them. Castles suck resources from surrounding provinces, as well as 'unlocking' resources in the province they're located.

Each castle has an "admin" setting which says how much it gathers from the neighboring provinces that you own. So where you build a castle the resources will go up, and near it they will go down.

There is alot of strategy in picking a spot to build a castle.
A) defense of course for strategic locations
B) does that province have high-resource units you would like to build more of
C) will it steal resources from provinces that have units you wanted more of
D) is it so close to another castle that it will steal resources from it

ALso take note that not only can each race build a castle different than others, but they can build differently in different terrain. The castle they can build in the mountains does not mean its the same type of castle with the same defenses and admin than the one that same nation can build in the swamp.

Also, unrest destroys resources, although it won't push it to zero so it's not the problem you're looking at currently.
