I too love magma eruption. It kills most units it hits and it hits alot(shield dont stop it and AoE means it auto hits) of units, making if very effective for clearing large chunks of the enemy army.

Depends on the situation, I have used Magma Eruption against heavily armored units, and it leaves much to be desired.

True, but it is far more effective than bladewind against such enemies and, as its an earth spell, you could combine with with iron bane ect to take off that armour for some fun .
Good point thouhg, very heavy armour is tough for it.

I think Magma Eruption is best used against medium troops, and Blade Wind is better against light ones. They are both great spells though.

Against light troops(who often have shields) i would say go with magma eruption until your mage has pretty high precision. You can quite regularly hit 10-12 light units per casting with a very high kill rate against their light armour. The biggest bonus is that any unit in the target squares are automatically hit where-as bladewind can be fairly easily stopped(and dosnt kill as many). Against lightly armoured(8 prot or less i would say) enemies who lack shields bladewind would probably be better. Bladewind also scales its effectiveness well with the casters precision.

I think that Swarm has now become an awesome spell. In my last SP game, I had a Pan spamming it, and it was very fun to watch a horde of dragonflies take down a 200+ hp sacred statue pretender. The rest of my troops were chasing down stragglers, so the swarm just concentrated on the statue. Very pretty, watching the constant stream of 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,... damage markers going up.

Yeah, it's the shields that are the killer vs. Blade Wind. Plus, if your mage's precision is too good (or the enemies are too close) all the blades hit the same square and you only kill 3 enemies, or whatever. Magma Eruption will always hit 5+ squares.
Of course, Magma Eruption requires kind of difficult paths.
