Advice on research
I definately make building research up a priority for me early in the game. However, I think my order of research is a bit less organized. Can someone suggest a series of techs for the 1st phase of the game?
I play balance mod if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
Javaslinger

Re: Advice on research
Armor is cheap and solid, plus a long range weapon of some sort. Destroyers are good too.
Then you will want to start looking into unlocking the advanced stuff.

Re: Advice on research
As I play games with few players, I research economic sciences first:
Space yards, theories, mining and research.
plus sensors and ship infrastructures and computers
I colonize all seen planets and I build as many science facilities as possible.
But I stop everything when I find any player, to go on searching weaponry and building fighting ship.
I play in accord with this idea:
"How can you kill me if I am everywhere?"
EDIT: just a modder challenge: Make an AI that play like this!

Re: Advice on research
My absolute first research is always sensors, to level 4, this allows you to scan in a six hex range for quick exploration. I work on ship hulls, engines, and a weapon from there.
