I'd somehow missed the inclusion of alliances. Should add something. Anyone know how it works?. Only problem being personally that I don't like other people, even allies, having access to my space.

Treaties now have a whole bunch of possible stipulations... i.e. do not bypass minefields etc.

That's good, I don't like aliens to bypass all my border defenses and colonizing planets in my systems just because I started trading with them.
