Sound File Mis-Match
I was playing US Army vs. Soviets (ca. 1988) and noticed that the IPM1 cannon sounded more like a rifle shot than a canon round.

Nope, that's the correct sound effect. It doesn't have the same "Boom" as some of the others but it is the correct sound for that weapon. The rifle shots are a little different.

This is slightly off topic but I have a video of Challengers firing and they sound nothing like the sounds most people have come to associate with tank guns . (attached MP3)

well that sounds about right, were can you go to find sounds like that in mp3 format, so that way I can change my sounds?

second thought If I changed my my files, will it affect the game when I play PBEM or the camp. or senarios?

they will only affect PBEM games if you change then using mobhack.
Just manually switching sound files wont affect anything.
