Why are the modded banners not working for me??

I downloaded modded banners from Illwinter's site. I activated the mod, I get the little banner showing in the upper right of the screen on the main screen, but when I go in game, nothing is different.

Is it a game you already had started before you installed/activated the banner mod? I believe mods only affect games created after they were installed, so if it isn't a new game you're playing, try creating a new game and see if the banners work there.
