What determines the research ability of your pretender?
At first I thought it was fixed by which one you chose, but apparently not. Best magic skill +2 or something?

It's not best magic skill plus 2.
Try out a rainbow mage. And look at how much research power he has. If you're impressed by that, make him a sage. Then you are talking about enough research to succeed even in a drain 3 dominion.
My rainbow mage I am now using with ulm has 30 (!!!) research points.

Re: What determines the research ability of your pretender?
Ok, sure, the research skill does vary by which one you choose. Taking a sage obviously gives you more research points than taking a dragon.
But a rainbow mage doesn't necessarily get a ton of research points. Try the crone, for example.
What I noticed (I think ) is that you can get different research points by taking the same physical type defender if you allocate his spell points differently.

Re: What determines the research ability of your pretender?
Research ability is (2) + (sum of all magic paths except holy and unholy) + (4 points for being a sage)+(1 per experience star) + (1 per magic scale or -1 per drain scale) + (3 points for having an owl quill) + (9 points for having a skull mentor)
The best research pretender, therefore, is probably the Great Sage. He's a steal, at 5 DP aboe the Archmage...

Each Dragon can shapechange to a human counterpart. I believe the Red Dragon shapechanges into a sage. So if early research then lategame dragonstomp'n is your flavor, you can use him.

Yes Red Dragon's humanoid form is a sage.
There are some other items which can also increase research ability.
