Missing ship designs.

I keep having a problem with missing ship/unit designs, specifically ones that have bigger weapon mounts. I will start a game with high racial points and technology, design a fleet and then save the race. The next time I start up an identical game all the designs with larger weapon mounts are gone, my weapon platforms, my bases, some of my ships. It is very frustrating. I have version 1.91 of SE IV gold. I installed (or tried to) the mods from the disk, but am having the problem with the original game, which I select from the SE4 launcher. Is it a bug, or am I doing something wrong? please help.
