About that scene... since I'm neither Mel nor film critic/analyser I can't say for sure, but if the punishment of infidels was the main message of the film then we should saw the severe punishment of Pharisees and those romans with scourges. But we won't. Then remember Judas: it was satan who drove him to suicide, not god. And black raven is typically demonic symbol, but not divine like pigeon in christianity.
