Default Simultaneous movement?

Hi,
I'm in the process of setting up a new single-player game. The idea occurred to me to try simultaneous movement this time.

I've never played this way, and I'm more than a little wary: It's my intention that this particular game will be my primary entertainment for the next couple of weeks.

A detailed rundown on what simultaneous movement is like and how it differs from turn-based movement would be very much appreciated.
