Default Fixing the dreaded 0xc0000022 error with Windows 10 Content Creator Update

Ladies and gentlemen,

We recently got a number of tech support requests from players getting an error with our ATF Engine games (Armored Task Force, Raging Tiger, The Falklands War, and The Star and the Crescent). The error reads:

“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click OK to close the application”

It took a ton of digging and trial and error, but we have found the issue. The problem is with the new Windows 10 Content Creator update. The update makes an unpublished change to DirectX that breaks ATF Engine Games (and a lot of other 2D games).

Luckily, the solution is very simple.
  1. Download the file attached to this thread
  2. Open the compressed (zip) folder you downloaded. Inside is a file called "dplayx.dll."
  3. Copy this dll file into the folder to which you installed Armored Task Force (or any of the other ATF Engine game). Depending on where you installed the program, this might require administrator privileges. The attached file should be in the same directory as the file “ATF.exe.”
  4. Then simply start the game normally, using any of the shortcuts installed with the game (on the desktop or in the program folder of the Start menu). The game will run fine.

This fix is ONLY needed for computers with Windows 10 Content Creator update installed. Other operating systems do not need (and should not use) this fix. In other words, if you are not getting the 0xc0000022 error, do not follow the above steps.

Sorry for the issues.
