Constructing buildings

I'm sorry if this has been asked and addressed elsewhere on in the forums, but here goes:

I started playing the demo the other day (no experience what-so-ever with DOM I). So I followed the, very brief, quick start. Shortly after starting, an earthquake destroyed my temple.

Is it a limitation of the demo that I can't build a temple? Every unit only had the option to destroy the two buildings in the province. Or do I need a priest in order to build a temple (which would seem silly to me, that'd be like saying the only way to build a college would be to have a college-educated person when there are no colleges yet )?

Anyway, I appreciate whatever help there is to be had on the question.
